This pattern is known as E Shape or E Form, because it is based around the shape of an open E chord. If you look at the notes circled in green you see the pattern of a open E. In the key of G, this pattern has the root on the low E (6th) string at the 3rd fret.

The lower half of the pattern forms the top half of the G Form and the top half, the lower half of the D Form.

Although only G major is shown here this applies to all the scales.
