This pattern is known as D Shape or D Form, because it is based around the shape of an open D chord. If you look at the notes circled in green you see the pattern of a open D. In the key of G, this pattern has the root on the D (4th) string at the 5th fret.
The lower half of the pattern forms the top half of the E Form and the top half, the lower half of the C Form.
Although only G major is shown here this applies to all the scales.
