This pattern is known as A Shape or A Form, because it is based around the shape of an open A chord. If you look at the notes circled in green you see the pattern of a open A. In the key of G, this pattern has the root on the A (5th) string at the 10th fret.
The lower half of the pattern forms the top half of the E Form and the top half, the lower half of the C Form.
Although only G major is shown here this applies to all the scales.
